‎Pep Guardiola eyes Diogo Costa as Ederson replacement amid injury woes

‎Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has reportedly begun the search for a long-term replacement for Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson, who continues to struggle with a persistent groin injury. Since joining City in 2017, Ederson has played a pivotal role in the club’s domestic and European success, securing multiple Premier League titles and the elusive UEFA Champions League crown.

‎However, his recurring fitness issues this season have cast doubt over his reliability between the posts, prompting Guardiola and City’s management to explore alternatives. According to a report from The Mirror, FC Porto’s Diogo Costa has emerged as the leading candidate. The Portuguese international, widely regarded as one of Europe’s top young goalkeepers, has a €75 million (£63m) buy-out clause in a contract that runs until 2027.

‎While the release clause is viewed as steep by the City hierarchy, the Premier League champions are optimistic about negotiating a reduced fee, potentially in the region of £50 million. Their confidence is partly attributed to the recent appointment of Hugo Viana as director of football. Viana’s close relationship with Costa’s agent, Jorge Mendes, could play a key role in facilitating a deal.
‎Former City and England goalkeeper David James has also weighed in, recommending Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher as another viable candidate. The Irish international has impressed in limited appearances for the Reds and is reportedly seeking regular first-team football.
‎Manchester City will return to Premier League action midweek with a vital home fixture against Aston Villa, as they continue their push for yet another domestic title. Whether Ederson will feature remains uncertain, but Guardiola’s search for stability in goal is already well underway. SA
